Our Summer 2016 newsletter can be found here. With the recent outbreak of violence in Juba, the state of South Sudan is in further decline and uncertainty. We at Sudan Sunrise remain hopeful and committed to our different projects inside the country.
This month we are excited to welcome a new board member to Sudan Sunrise, have some updates regarding the Torit Cathedral, as well as other projects such as well-building in Wunthou and Daniel Deng Kuot’s experience with violent youth in the cattle fields. Read our May newsletter here.

Even though the weather was a bit dreary, this year’s Walk to End Genocide was a great success! Thank you to everyone who braved the rain and showed up. This is the second annual Walk to End Genocide that the Jewish World Watch and Darfur Interfaith Network has coordinated, along with two of our board members, Richard Young and Martha Boshnick.
For those who speak French, an article was published in Le Figaro regarding our project in Torit! Here is the link – we are hoping to have at least some of it translated by the end of the week. Tom, Alexa and Rudwan had quite the successful meeting today with the parish council and Catholic clergy in Torit. Rudwan spoke of who he used to be in the past, and his present and future committment to peace and reconciliation between Sudan and South Sudan, as well as Christians and Muslims. For the week of March 10-18th, we are in Juba and Torit, South Sudan regarding our interreligious reconciliation project in Torit. We are working on an initiative to rebuild a Catholic cathedral that had been twice-destroyed by Islamists. The leader of the project, Rudwan Dawod, a Muslim from Darfur, is spearheading the project along with volunteers from Juba and Khartoum. On February 17, 2016, we wired the remainder of the money raised to being the building of well in Wunthou as part of the Lost Boys Education Operation. This is this village’s first-ever well, and we are thrilled to be a part of the process! We are hoping to receive pictures of updates as the construction continues to progress.
Sudan Sunrise has been made aware that in late January, three churches were burned to the ground in Yida refugee camp. The Christian and Muslim refugees from the Nuba mountains live in peace in this camp in South Sudan. Reports from Yida suggest these were the acts of outside agitators who have expressed their solidarity with ISIS.
