Press Release from Conference on Sudanese Reconciliation July 2-4, 2007, Kansas City, Missouri

Our mission at Sudan Sunrise is to facilitate the efforts of Southern Sudanese Christians to aid and stand in solidarity with Darfurian Muslims, and to facilitate reconciliation among all Sudanese.  Our goals are to:

  • Raise awareness about the suffering and current genocide in western Darfur, Sudan, and in Darfurian refugee camps on the Chad/Sudan border, and the progress of peace for this region.
  • Further the reconciliation between Darfurians and Southern Sudanese, and call for all Sudanese to join Darfurians in standing with them against the genocide.  Challenge all Sudanese to demonstrate their united stand for peace in Darfur.
  • Facilitate reconciliation among Sudanese Muslims, Christians and others, in order to help end oppression and bring a just and lasting peace to all the people of Sudan.
  • Demonstrate to the Khartoum government, and to the world, the power of forgiveness, reconciliation and a united stand for peace.

In April 2006 Sudan Sunrise co-sponsored a "Standing Together Against Genocide" dinner in Washington, D.C., attended by hundreds of Sudanese, both Darfurian Muslims and Southern Sudanese Christians.

On July 2-4, 2007, almost 40 Sudanese leaders gathered in Kansas City, Missouri for a Conference on Sudanese Reconciliation.  Links to the press release and Statement from the Conference are above.  The road to reconciliation for the people of Sudan is long and hard.  The grass roots efforts that are beginning are small steps to healing past wounds and offering forgiveness.

On November 18, 2007, over 80 Sudanese leaders gathered in Washington, DC for a peace and reconciliation conference followed by a united march.  Please see the article by Jimmy Mulla and the Call to Solidarity on our Home page for more information about this meeting.

In March 2008 a team including two Southern Sudanese and one Darfurian Muslim along with Americans traveled from the US to South Sudan to further this reconciliation and peace effort.
