Darfurian girls in a refugee camp in Eastern Chad. This simple space under a plastic tarp serves as the camp’s school room. This was taken in November 2004 during the first relief trip of the Sudan Council of Churches to the camps. Notice the children bundled for warmth against the cold of the desert; that some of the children have bleached hair from malnutrition.

Refugee shelters scattered over the desert in Eastern Chad.

This little boy was badly burned when his village was burned, and many of his family were killed.

Even in the somber moment of sharing stories of their suffering it was clear a great reconciliation was taking place. Tereza Bol (far left) symbolically joins hands with rape victim. James Telar (rear with glasses raises hands in solidarity with former enemies) with mission leader Daniel Deng Kuot center front.

Enemies no longer! The first relief trip to Darfurian refugees causes a breakthrough in relations between these former enemies, Sudanese Christians, and the Muslims of Darfur.

First Sudan Mercy team brought refugees this shipment of much needed medicine.

November 2004, Dr. Katie Rhoads, (who was behind the camera on all the rest of the photos of this trip!) with James Telar (l) and Moussa Omer (r.), as they met with the Darfurian leaders in Chad. Katie, a surgeon, is now devoting her life to medical mission in Northern Uganda and Sudan, and is currently studying tropical medicine in England.

The third mission to Chad delivered a large shipment (two full truck loads of clothing and 25,000 lbs of powdered milk), that filled two trucks of this size.

The team for the third mission to Chad (April 2005), Daniel Deng, team leader, Peter A. Deng, local coordinator, Anita Sanborn from Denver, and Tereza Bol, taken outside the home of a local Chadean pastor.

Although not photographed by our team, this is one small example of the atrocities being committed against Darfurians.
