Behind this photo is an extraordinary story of a movement which could change the world. The smiles and peace signs are a spontaneous burst of joy from two Sudanese groups who were formerly bitter enemies.

Sudan Sunrise is a movement
of Americans and Sudanese Christians
and Muslims working to achieve reconciliation,
unity and the end of oppression in Sudan.

Through grassroots reconciliation,
education and community building,
we lift up examples of peace and forgiveness
between former enemies as alternatives
to the history of violence in Sudan.

Help Manute Bol's dream of building 41 schools in Sudan become a reality

Children attend school in the village of Paloi
.

"The key to peace is education."

_Manute Bol

After a 21-year war between North and South Sudan which left 2 million dead and over 4 million displaced, the people in South Sudan suffer from extreme poverty.  The devastations of war, genocide, poverty, pestilence and famine are evident in this region where more than two generations of Sudanese have had no access to schools or education. The illiteracy rate is more than 75%, and over 90% of women and girls cannot read or write.  There is little food, and much of the land has not been cultivated for over 20 years.

Sudanese refugees are beginning to return home from refugee camps in Kenya and Uganda to find their families, but they come home to lack of food and clean water, no schools for their children and no medical services.  Life remains a struggle for survival in Southern Sudan, and many live on less than $1/day.
