Supporting Sudan Sunrise represents a golden opportunity for Americans of all faiths to "walk their talk", and to help a movement in Africa that could inspire a new way of overcoming animosities among nations and groups of people around the globe.
George Gallup, Jr. Founding Chairman, The George H. Gallup International Institute
"I believe Sudan Sunrise's institutional heart is in the right place. By promoting reconciliation and bridge-building between Darfuris and South Sudanese, this small group is preparing the way for marginalized people throughout Sudan to realize their shared aspirations for social justice, security, and dignity. Sudan Sunrise's mission is a welcome antidote to Khartoum's strategy of divide-and-rule, and one that offers hope for the future." David Morse, Journalist. 5. HISTORY
Sudan Sunrise is a movement of Sudanese and Americans working together to facilitate the Sudanese in their heroic reconciliation and mission efforts.
This movement began in 2004 with Southern Sudanese Christians who organized to get aid to refugees from the genocide in Darfur. This aid effort was extraordinary because the Darfurians were used by the government of Sudan in a 21-year war that left two million Southerners dead and four million displaced.
"Forgive us for killing you", one refugee said. "We thought you were infidels, but now we see that you are our brothers".
This act of extraordinary forgiveness has sparked a reconciliation movement between Sudanese Christians and Muslims, and has inspired an equally heroic response among some Sudanese Muslims who are boldly reaching out to Southerners, despite criticism. The small beginnings have already had great impact, but Sudan and the world need this reconciliation effort to grow a thousand-fold.
6. STATEMENT OF FAITH
Sudan Sunrise began as a network of Americans partnering with Southern Sudanese Christians, who out of their deep determination to follow the teaching of Jesus to forgive and to love their enemies, committed themselves to aid Darfurian Muslims. Begun as a non-denominational Christian network to facilitate this heroic effort, Sudan Sunrise took as our Statement of Faith the earliest and most commonly held Christian faith statement, The Apostles' Creed However, as this movement has grown Sudan Sunrise has also partnered with the reconciliation efforts of Sudanese Muslims. Consequently, a wide range of non-Sudanese of all faith backgrounds have joined in supporting this work of Sudanese Christians and Muslims who are working together to achieve reconciliation. In addition, Sudan Sunrise is a network that supports the work of Southern Sudanese in a wide range of efforts in Southern Sudan ranging from community development, education, health, church growth and church planting. In the Boma area we are partnering with Sudanese who have been invited by unreached tribes to come and plant indigenous churches among them.
We welcome all individuals and groups who share our vision of peace and reconciliation in Sudan to join our efforts.
